The Real Cost of Siding Over Brick and Why You Might Regret It
The siding price is only one line in the project. Learn what a responsible over brick assembly must address before the masonry disappears behind it.
You Are Pricing a Wall Assembly, Not a Surface Swap
Can you put siding over brick? Sometimes. A responsible design must establish a suitable attachment plane, manage water and drying, preserve or intentionally redesign drainage, flash openings and penetrations, and resolve the extra wall thickness at every transition.
That is why the real siding over brick cost is not the advertised material price. It is the complete assembly, the condition of the masonry beneath it, and the detail work required to make windows, doors, utilities, roofs, decks, and trim function with the new exterior plane.
Do Not Cover Brick to Avoid Understanding It
Brick veneer is commonly designed as a drainage wall. Water that passes through the outer masonry is managed through an air space, flashing, and weeps that direct it back outside. The exact construction varies by house, age, and region, but installing another cladding does not erase the existing wall's moisture responsibilities.
Before any covering is designed, the brick and mortar should be evaluated for movement, loose or damaged units, eroded joints, staining, missing or obstructed weeps, flashing problems, and signs of water entry. Covering a symptom can make future observation and repair more difficult without solving its source.
This is also the moment to ask whether the homeowner truly wants a different cladding or simply wants the brick to feel more intentional. Masonry repair, selective architectural changes, or a masonry mortar finish may preserve the wall as masonry while changing its character.
First determine whether the masonry is sound, how the wall manages water, and whether the design goal can be achieved while keeping brick as the exterior masonry material.
What May Sit Between the Brick and the New Siding
This diagram is a planning sequence, not an installation specification. The designer, manufacturer instructions, local code, and conditions at the property determine which components are required and how they connect.
Existing masonry
Brick, mortar, weeps, flashing, openings, and known or concealed conditions remain part of the wall.
Attachment plane
Furring or another engineered approach may be needed to create a flat, adequately anchored, nailable surface.
Water control
A water resistive layer, drainage space, flashings, and termination details must work as one system.
Optional insulation
Only specified insulation adds a documented thermal resistance. Siding itself is not an insulation strategy.
New cladding
Vinyl, fiber cement, engineered wood, or metal follows its own fastening, movement, clearance, and flashing rules.

A proposal can be professionally formatted and still omit the assembly decisions that control performance and final cost.
Siding Is Not the Same as Exterior Insulation
A recladding project can be an opportunity to add continuous exterior insulation. When designed correctly, that insulation can improve thermal performance and reduce thermal bridging. The insulation product, thickness, continuity, flashing, vapor behavior, and climate specific assembly matter.
Siding alone should not be treated as an energy upgrade, and neither should German Smear. German Smear is a masonry mortar finish, not insulation. No responsible contractor can predict a particular home's indoor temperature, HVAC use, or utility bill from an exterior appearance choice alone.
If energy performance is part of the goal, ask for the proposed insulation's documented R value and an assembly detail. A qualified building professional can evaluate how the proposed wall interacts with the roof, foundation, windows, air control layers, and local climate.
Choose the Project You Actually Want
Regret often begins when a cosmetic goal is sold as though it were a material selection. Start with the desired result, then define the wall work that result requires.
Repair and preserve the brick
Best when the homeowner still values brick and the primary issues are maintenance, isolated damage, trim, landscape, or architectural composition. Explore completed masonry transformations before hiding the material.
Develop a mortar finish
Best when the desired change is depth, softened contrast, treated joint work, and developed architectural character. Compare German Smear finish styles and test the direction in the Rendering Lab.
Design a complete recladding
Best when the homeowner is committed to a different cladding or a comprehensive exterior insulation strategy and accepts the opening, drainage, transition, attachment, maintenance, and future removal implications.
Siding Over Brick Questions
A responsible installation typically needs more than fastening siding to an uneven masonry face. The project may require a flat attachment plane, adequate anchorage, water control layers, drainage, flashings, and details that comply with the siding manufacturer's instructions and local code. The correct assembly is property and product specific.
Furring is one method used to create a level attachment plane and a space for drainage and drying, but its material, spacing, anchorage, and interaction with other wall layers must be designed. Follow the cladding manufacturer's instructions, local code, and project specific professional guidance.
Not automatically, but moisture risk must be evaluated. Brick veneer often relies on an air space, flashing, and weeps. A new assembly must manage rain, drainage, drying, penetrations, and transitions without obstructing or contradicting the existing wall's water management. Poor details can create problems; a properly designed assembly addresses them.
It may avoid demolition, but that does not make it universally less expensive. Over brick work can add masonry repairs, furring, anchorage, drainage components, window and door extensions, utility changes, transition details, design, and access costs. Compare complete written scopes for the property rather than material prices.
Siding alone is not insulation. A designed recladding project can include continuous exterior insulation with a documented R value, but the performance depends on the whole assembly, continuity, climate, air sealing, windows, roof, and other building systems. Do not assume a utility bill change from the siding material.
The brick may remain beneath it, but removal is not necessarily a clean reversal. Anchors, holes, sealants, changed flashings, altered trim, staining, and previously concealed masonry repairs can require restoration. The removal plan should be discussed before installation if future reversibility matters.
Existing conditions should be evaluated before covering. Loose or damaged brick, deteriorated mortar, water evidence, blocked or missing drainage paths, and flashing concerns can affect both the existing wall and the proposed assembly. Covering the wall should not substitute for understanding necessary repairs.
